  • Robinson Crusoe is the most famous book who tells about travel, return travel....I Had red this book when I had 13 years old. It was the first that I Had really learning in class.

Click here to read some elements about this book.

    or here

Our Teatcher gave us a problematic question: When you back from travel, have you changed or not ?

I try to answer and give my opinion with some exemples.

This is the elements to written Voyage and Return Storie  (for Christopher Booker)

    1. anticipation stage and "fall" into the other world
when we first meet the hero or heroine they are likely to be in some state that lays them open to a new shattering experience. Their consciousness is in some way restricted. they many be just young and naïve with only limited experience of the world. They may be more actively curious or looking for something to happen to them

    2.Initial fascination or dream stage:
at the first their exploration of this disconcertingly new world may be exhilarating because is it so puzzling and unfamiliar. But it's never a place in which they can feel at home

    3. Frustration stage
gradually the mood of the adventure changed to one of frustration, difficulty and oppression. A shadow begins to intrude which becomes increasingly alarming

    4. nightmare stage
the shadow becomes so dominating that it poses a threat to the heroes survival

    5. thrilling escape and return
Just when the threat closing in on the hero becomes too much to bear, they make their escape from the other world, back to here they started. At this point, the real question posed by the whole adventure is: how far have they learned or gained anything from their experience? have they been fundamentally changed or was is all Just a dream ?

  • Erest Hemingway was born the 21 th july of 1899 in Oak Park Illinois (U.S.A). He was an famous autor. « The old man and the sea » symbolized his skill. Ernest was also a war reportert who lived during the period of the Wars World I and II. The 2 July 1961 he commited a suicide in ketchum indaho.

     Ernest Hemingway, the traveler

First, Ernest Hemingway was an outdoorsman. Indeed it had found a passion in sport, it was like an amazing entertainment. When he was at Pamplona in 1921 he often play bull-fishing. In 1933, surprisingly Hemingway went to make safaris in Africa; and some years later, in 1934, Ernest had fished, marlin, tuna fish and hunted big game deer in Florida and Wyoming. Thank to his travels, the reporter could practise many differents sport. His passion for fishing give to him inspiration to writte novel "The old man and the sea" who's published in 1954. The autor win moreover the Literature Nobel price.

Secondly, Ernest lived during the 2 famous wars.. That is why I think he became a war reporter. In fact he became jounalist and wrote articles for The Kansas City star in 1916 or for the Toronto Star in 1919 till 1920. On his articl we can found portraits of solidiers, actions... In 1918 the reporter was present during the WWI in Italy because U.S.A had help England, France, and Italy to win the war. He wasn't just in love about famous and importante wars because for exemple, he worked on Spanish civil war in 1936. During Paris' liberation in 1944, Ernest was present because he correpondent in France. This man was like "The ying and yang" because he loved literatur who symbolized lightness, softness. It is a weapon without bad action. But he also like the war, the soldiers, actions, blood... It's the opposite of literature.

Thirdly, the journalist was often fell in love. His first love was a nurse who turned him down in 1918.. One year later he directly married with Hadley Richardson, who gave him one child. During his mariage Ernest begin to writte his first novels... after 7 years of marriage the cople divorces.  In 1940, the reporter was marry 2 times. Infact first Ernest meet Pauline Pfeifer, a reporter, they marry to divorced 9 years later. The journalist had 2 childrens with Pauline. Secondly, Martha Gellhorn was his third wife with whom he was stay 5 years. Finally, in 1946 till 1961, the journalist was marry with a reporter, Mary Welsh with whom he ended his days...

Finally, we can said than Enest Hemingway was a traveler... In america, the reporter went to Chicago, shared his time between key west and chicago during the winter and Wyoming during the summer. He visited Europe, and their beautiful places like Venice who is the capital of love, Paris, spain... Ernest went to Cuba and the 2 july 1961 he died in Ketchul, in idaho.

  • The old man and the sea is a novel written by ernest Hemingway in 1952.

Ernest Hemingway: The old man and the sea

Ernest Hemingway: The old man and the sea

I suppose this novel is about one old man, fisherman who is a job very tiring, and the sea.

    the text (part1)

    questions

The story takes place at the gulf streaum around Cuba.

    The characteres are:

-The old man, Santiago. We can understand he's an old  fisherman who like his job. In this text we have many informations about physical appearance. In fact, the old man eyes have the same color as the sea, he wear glass . He also have "brown blotches of the benevolent cancer" (cancer because he always stay on sunshine) , "was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkless in the back of his neck".

Even if the old man is "unlucky" because he don't stole the fish we know it's a very nice man. "Salace" . He is a lonely boy and stay calm when other fisherman made fun.

-The boy began to fish with the old man who teached how fishing when the boy had 5 years old. The boy creates a contrast because he's very lucky. He must obeay to his parents and left Santiago.

-Rogielo another fisherman. We can imagined than santiago admir him? He's also very lucky and famous. Everyboby are fascinated front of him.

The relationship between the two main characters.

We understand than the boy love the old man. In fact, he must obey and change, take another boat but he want help the old man. Santiago want the boy stay withlucky fisherman. He's not angry and understand because he's proud of the boy.

The other fishermen made fun of this physical appearance, maybe because he's old, because he don't fished, they can laugh about no luck or front of santiago and boy relationship.

At the end of the novel, we understand the old man hope fish with the boy like befor....

Comparing the opening of the novel to the begining of john santiago movie. (1958)

The words used in the movie correspond to the text?

First, the text is respected. In fact the novel and the movie have the same script, but sometimes its changed the order of the dialogue.

What the impact has the off-sceen voice on the viewer?

The narrator's voice is slow which suppose to teach a moral and tell you something important. The moral symbolized the universal aspect, we have something to learn threw this story.

What do you think about the choice of the actor ?

The old man, in the movie doesn't lo ok cuban because of his pale face. We can understand it's a famous american actor. The young boy drinks coke wherea, in the novel, he drinks beer... Maybe because, a child is more touching for the viewer, children can identify to him. The actors look younger than the seem to be in the novel.

Old man don't wear glass/ He don't have brown clothes and skin cancer in the movie.

How does the film makerstress the relationship ?

The film maker uses a close up shot to see the expressions and also an over the shoulder shot to focus on the boys' relationship.

The opening scene corresponds to the anticipation stage by christopher booer. Indeed although the old man hasn't caught  fish for 85 days, now he stills believe he manage to catch a fish and a big one. He's ready for new journey and feels time has come. He's all the more confident than the boy trusts him.
